When transitioning out of the military and looking for a job, or looking for a new role, the old adage is true…looking for a job is a job. It takes time, strategy, and effort. What do we mean by these?
Time – it will take some time. Most large companies, the average time to fill a role is 60 days. It takes time to look at job openings, find jobs and companies that interest you, research those companies… it takes time for people to respond, schedule interviews, the company to make a decision.
Strategy – what do you enjoy doing? what type of job are you looking for? For example, Do you like working and talking with people? Do you prefer to be left alone to do your work with no distractions?
Where do you want to work? Does it matter the size of the company or the industry? Does it make a difference if you would use the product the company makes? Are you looking for something to pay the bills or looking to build a career?
What roles are you going to apply to? How are you going to apply to them? Who are you going to network with? How will you structure your resume?
Effort – once you have a strategy, now comes the effort. Researching companies, reading job postings, edits to your resume, submitting the application, write the networking messages, follow ups, respond to responses. Interview prep, keeping a tracker of your applications and activity, Interview preparation.
