Role: 4 Per Diem Emergency Department RNs for the Atlanta VAMC (1 day shift/1 night shift)

We are seeking experienced Emergency Department Registered Nurses (ED RNs) to provide high-quality, rapid-response care on an as-needed basis to patients with acute and emergent conditions at the Atlanta VA Health System. The ED RNs will function both independently and under the guidance of the Nurse Manager or designee, ensuring timely triage, stabilization, and treatment in a fast-paced environment while delivering a holistic approach to patient care.

Night shift 7:30pm to 8:00am (12hr shifts)

Day shift 8:00am to 7:30pm (12hr shifts)

NOTE: This is a per diem position with no guaranteed minimum hours; scheduling is based on operational needs, procedure volume, and staffing requirements.

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Assess and manage patients with a wide range of physical and psychological conditions.
  • Provide emergency care, including medication administration (oral, subcutaneous, IM, IV), blood product administration, and bedside testing.
  • Perform phlebotomy, peripheral line insertion/maintenance, and central line care.
  • Assist in operative/invasive procedures and care for patients in isolation or requiring special precautions.
  • Insert and troubleshoot urinary catheters.
  • Collaborate with physicians, residents, and ancillary staff in patient care.
  • Initiate patient education and discharge instructions as prescribed.
  • Maintain complete and accurate documentation per facility policies.
  • Provide psychological support to patients as needed.

Skills Experience:

  • Minimum three (3) years of recent ED or major trauma center experience, with no more than a six-month gap in practice.
  • Ability to manage a 1:4 to 1:5 patient load in a fast-paced emergency setting.

Patient Care:

  • Assess and care for patients with diverse physical and psychological diagnoses.
  • Provide care to patients requiring special precautions, such as those in isolation.
  • Assume patient care assignments for a group of patients, ensuring their comprehensive care.
  • Administer medications (oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous) and blood products.
  • Perform complex wound dressing care and maintenance.
  • Provide care for COVID-19 positive patients and Patients Under Investigation (PUI) for COVID-19.

Diagnostic and Therapeutic Procedures:

  • Insert and maintain peripheral lines.
  • Maintain central lines for the administration of intravenous fluids.
  • Perform phlebotomy and bedside testing.
  • Provide emergency care as indicated.

Documentation and Communication:

  • Verify physician orders.
  • Complete and document care accurately according to facility and unit policies.
  • Offer psychological support to patients as needed.

Collaboration and Teamwork:

  • Work closely with the healthcare team to meet patient care needs.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Degree Requirements:

  • Graduate of a nursing program accredited by ACEN or CCNE.
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Nursing or related field preferred.

Certification Requirements

  • Current, unrestricted RN license from any U.S. state.
  • BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
  • ACLS certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Preferred: Certification in Emergency Nursing (CEN) through BCEN or Acute/Critical Care Nursing (CCRN) through AACN with ED experience.
