Job Description:

Role: 1 FTE Emergency Department (ED) Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

 

Overview: We are seeking an experienced Emergency Department (ED) Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) to provide direct patient care and assist licensed nurses in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. The ED CNA will perform basic nursing care, diagnostic support duties, and treatment procedures while anticipating the needs of professional staff and working collaboratively as part of the healthcare team. The role requires strong clinical skills, adaptability, and the ability to respond effectively to emergencies.

 

Day Shift 0730-2000, 3x12hr shifts or 36 hrs/week

 

Rate info: $25 hr including $4.93 H&W. These are SCA roles.

 

  • Skills/Experience:
    • Minimum two (2) years of recent experience in a healthcare setting, with at least six (6) months of recent experience in an emergency or acute care setting.
    • Experience in assisting with emergency procedures, diagnostic tests, and patient monitoring.
    • Proficiency in recording and reporting vital signs, changes in patient condition, and providing basic life support measures.
    • Ability to assist with activities of daily living (ADLs), personal hygiene, mobility, and patient transport.
    • Familiarity with infection control procedures and handling of patients in isolation.
    • Experience assisting patients with mental health needs, including accompanying them to appointments and conducting mental health environment evaluations.
  • Required Skills:
    • Perform a range of personal nursing care tasks, including feeding, walking, lifting, and assisting patients with hygiene care.
    • Assist in diagnostic examinations and emergency procedures, such as lumbar punctures, liver biopsies, and bone marrow extractions.
    • Take, record, and report vital signs and changes in patient condition (e.g., diabetic coma, insulin shock, GI hemorrhage).
    • Collect, label, and transport specimens to the laboratory.
    • Assemble necessary equipment, position patients for procedures, and escort patients to diagnostic studies.
    • Clean and maintain oxygen and suction therapy equipment and report necessary repairs.
    • Provide care for patients with Foley catheters, oxygen therapy, and postural drainage.
    • Administer basic life support (BLS) measures when needed.
    • Assist in completing patient admission history and nursing care documentation.
    • Conduct inventories and contraband searches to ensure patient safety.
    • Support patients in self-care activities, including dressing, eating, and the use of prosthetic devices.
  • Desired Skills:
    • Experience working in a high-acuity setting such as an emergency department or trauma unit.
    • Strong team collaboration and communication skills to work effectively with nurses, physicians, and other healthcare staff.
    • Experience monitoring and supporting mental health patients, including conducting evaluations of the mental health environment.
    • Ability to provide patient education on pre- and post-operative care under the guidance of an RN.
    • Familiarity with VHA and AVAHCS regulations regarding patient care and safety procedures.
  • Degree Requirements:
    • No formal degree required.
    • Must be a graduate of a state-approved nursing assistant training program.
    • A CNA certification, PCT certification, or ICT certification/license is required.
  • Certification Requirements:
    • Current CNA certification from any U.S. state.
    • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification accredited by the American Heart Association.
    • Acceptable alternative certifications:
    • Patient Care Technician (PCT) Certification/License
    • Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) Certification/License
